DHAKA: Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin dismissed the concern of World Heritage Centre of Unesco which had declared the Sundarbans as being in danger.

Md Shahab Uddin said: “Whatever is said about Sundarbans, I think fear of environmental danger in Sundarbans is not true.”

Md Shahab Uddinv was speaking to reporters on the occasion of World Environment Day at the secretariat on Tuesday (June 18).

To include Sundarbans in the ‘World Heritage in Danger’ site, a proposal will be placed on the proposed agenda for the 43rd session of UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Baku in Azerbaijan.

The minister said, “I even visited Sundarbans one month ago, but didn’t notice any such conditions. Sundarbans has got better. We made plans to protect Sundarbans. We’ll be able to preserve beauty of Sundarbans.”

“I don’t think there would be any damage to Rampal if thermal power plant is set up there,” the minister added.
