Rains bring sufferings at tax fair

DHAKA: Rains have disrupted the ongoing Income Tax Fair in city that falls on the fifth day on Saturday.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) sources said that the board has got some 104,970 new tax payers and 1,658 of them have already registered their names.

NBR has collected Tk 157.62 crore as income taxes in fifth day of the fair.

Shahriar Alam, who came from city’s Mirpur area, also expressed his frustration saying that he has a lower income job.

NRB officials have been harassing me for some days coming at my home. If I go to the revenue region I will face more harassment. So I decided to come to the fairground to avoid the hassle.

Nazneen Alam, a teacher, who came from city’s Gulshan area expressed her annoyance saying that I got wet in rains, no matter. But unfortunately, I could not save my papers from rain.

She further said that if I complete my return form by a lawyer, I had to pay bribes.

Even, in a tax office, no work can be done without bribes, she complained.

Moreover, harassment is also endless at the fair ground. The officials, here, paid negligence to me seeing the paper wet, she added, I am in a great trouble.

Besides, getting the service of income tax officials, some of the taxpayers expressed satisfaction.

Nicknamed as Sourav, who came from Motijheel said that he is feeling happy.

Many people have come in the fair despite rains. I have paid my tax without any hassles, he told banglanews.

The National Revenue Board (NBR) is organizing the weeklong fair from September 16 to 22 simultaneously at seven divisional and 54 district headquarters.

The fair at the divisional headquarters will be for seven days and at the district headquarters for four days.

As in the previous years, the major objective of the fair is making people aware about the importance and benefit of tax payment regularly.
