5 lakh employed thru’ mobile banking

DHAKA: Bangladesh Bank (BB) governor Dr Atiur Rahman said that around five lakh jobs have been created across the country through mobile banking.

The governor made the disclosure while inaugurating a BB sponsored project titled ‘Business Finance for the Poor in Bangladesh’ at a city hotel on Sunday.

The BB boss said that a total of 28 banks legally operated mobile banking till December last year. The banking covered 25.28 millions clients by the time, he added.

However, it has employed around 5 lakh people, he commented.

According to the governor, some 41,000 agents are involved in mobile banking.

Mentioning the success of mobile banking, Dr Atiur Rahman further informed the audience that Bangladesh Bank has earned Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) award for its contribution to provide financial services to the doorsteps of people through mobile banking.

Finance ministry Banking Division (financial services) secretary Dr M Aslam Alam, Bangladesh Bank deputy governor and also BFP-B project chief SK Sur Chowdhury, DFID Bangladesh country representative Sarah Cooke, Nathan Associates team leader David Munro, among others, were present at the event.
