Reliance to invest 1.5b for power in Bangladesh

DHAKA: Reliance Group, leading business conglomerate of India, has proposed to invest one and a half billion US Dollar to produce 750 megawatt power for Bangladesh establishing four plants here within two and half a year.

Satish Sheth, vice chairman of the group, had a final discussion with Prime Minister’s Energy Adviser Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury on the issue at PM office on Thursday.

After the meeting, Tawfiq-e-Elahi told journalists that the national grid will get 750MW more power by the aforesaid time.

Under the project, Reliance Group has proposed to set up plant to produce 3000MW power in four phases.

However the government has agreed for two plants initially. And Reliance Group is ready to invest three billion US Dollar in these plants.

The energy advisor also said Reliance Group will import required LNG and carry out the costs of set up of the floated terminal. It is going to be the first ever LNG-based power plant.

Moheshkhali and Meghnaghat are possible project sites.

Tawfiq-e-Elahi added, a technical committee has been formed to finalize the discussion and steps will be taken as per report.

A 4-member delegation of Reliance Group flew to Dhaka on a chartered plane on Thursday and returned after the meeting as well.
