Hazaribagh tanneries to be relocated by Dec 31

DHAKA: The reallocation process of all the tanneries from city’s Hazaribagh area to Savar industrial town will be complete within December 31.

Tannery Industry Owner Association leaders say that not only the relocation but production procedure will also be complete by the time.

The assertion was made in a meeting at industries ministry, according to a press note issued by senior official Abdul Jalil on Sunday (November 27).

The meeting was organized to review progress of implementation of the ‘Leather Industrial City-Dhaka’ project that is currently being developed by Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC).

Industries ministry high-ups, leather industrial city project director, Bangladesh Tannery Association chairman, and representatives of Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exports Association, BUET and Asian Foundation were also present at the meeting.

Industries ministry senior secretary Mosharraf Hossain urged the tannery owners to finish the relocation process by the time.

The leaders, however, said that 24 tanneries have already been transferred and started their production in Savar. Relocation of the rest of the factories is underway.

Government is implementing an environment-friendly project called ‘Leather Industrial City-Dhaka’ to relocate the tanneries from Hazaribag to reduce pollution in city.

The project costs Taka over 1,078-crore.
