South Korea keen to construct LNG terminal in Ctg

DHAKA: South Korea has expressed its interest in the construction of Bay-terminal and Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) terminal of the Chattogram port, state minister for shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said.

At the same time, the minister called on South Korean investors for more investment in shipping and fisheries in Bangladesh.

The shipping ministry revealed the information in a press release issued on Thursday (August 29).

According to the release, South Korea expressed its interest at a meeting between State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Professor Daniel Seong-Hyeok Moon of Korea held at the Glad Hotel in the South Korean capital Seoul on Thursday (August 28).

In the meeting, they discussed various issues related to bilateral interest. They discussed Blue Economy, Bio-Technology, Tidal Energy, and Ocean Safety, training in the Maritime Sector of Bangladesh, Jobs of Bangladeshi Sailors and Shipbuilding.

The Minister visited Busan, largest port of Korea, on Wednesday (August 27).

The Minister said Bangladesh is a big market for business. The Bangladesh government has been providing various facilities to the investors. He urged Korean businessmen to invest in the development of the shipping sector of Bangladesh to get those facilities.

He said Korea expressed interest to construct 'Deep Water Container Terminal' of the Payera Port. Besides, it wanted to set up a training center apart from running management and operations of any of four new Marine Academies in Bangladesh, he added.

Earlier on Tuesday (August 27), the State Minister for Shipping visited South Korea at the invitation of the Korean Ocean and Fisheries Minister to invest in the shipping and port-related areas of Bangladesh with the financial and technical assistance of South Korean government-private companies.

The visit will be helpful for the Korean investment in shipping and port operations. The state minister is leading a fice-member delegation.

He is expected to return home Friday (August 30).
