153 more Bangladeshi workers return from Saudi

DHAKA: 153 more Bangladeshi workers have returned from Saudi Arabia, the largest labor market of this country, according to Migration Programme of BRAC, a non-government organization.

BRAC sources said the workers arrived in Dhaka by a flight of Saudi Airlines around 11:20pm on Wednesday (Oct 31).

With the help of expatriate welfare desks like previous time, BRAC migration programme provided emergency support to go to respective home safely with food and water.

Shahjahan Mia, a returning worker of Comilla, said he had gone to Saudi Arabia a month and half ago. But he was arrested and returned home empty handed.

Ruhul Amin who hails from Kushtia also returned bare-footed as he had no sandal. He could not get money for expenses in 6 months. I had to return empty-handed at a time.

Head of BRAC migration Programme Shariful Hassan said at least 18,000 Bangladeshi workers have been repatriated from Saudi Arabia so far this year. Many Bangladeshi workers are being cheated in the name of a free visa that allows them to work multiple jobs simultaneously. Many are unable to earn money for expenses and arrested.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Embassy in Saudi Arabia says they will contact the Saudi government if they find out about sending back someone innocent. Recruiting agencies will have to take responsibility alongside the embassy's active role.
