Hasnat places 14-point demands for Dhaka University

Hasnat Abdullah, a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has placed a 14-point demand, including a call for banning student politics on the Dhaka University (DU) campus and strengthening the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu).

He presented the demands on his verified Facebook page on Monday evening and invited further recommendations in support of his proposals.

In his demands, he called upon the DU authorities to identify the leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) involved in the July Revolution attacks on students and file cases against them.

He also urged the withdrawal of false cases filed by BCL members against students over the past 15 years and demanded compensation for those who were tortured or wrongfully accused.

The roadmap to turn the university into a full-fledged residential one will have to be published and the seat of the residential halls will have to be ensured based on merit till publication and implementation of the roadmap, he said.

More residence halls must be built on the DU campus to address the seat shortage, and common room facilities for female students should be expanded, he said.

The authorities should renovate Salimullah Muslim Hall and reallocate seats to the students, said the student leader.

The guest and common room culture in the halls should be permanently abolished by enacting a law.

Scholarships based on need should be introduced for first-year students.

Additionally, the central library and halls’ reading rooms should be modernised and expanded.

The quality and standards of food in the DU halls and canteens must be improved, with increased subsidies if necessary.

The plying of public transport on the university campus must be prohibited to ensure the security of the students.

To ensure students' health care, the university's medical center should be modernized, and drug stores should be established in all residential halls.

The service quality of the registrar building should be modernised, and the university’s central mosque should be rebuilt with modern architecture, he said.
