CHITTAGONG: A faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League is enforcing strike at Chittagong University (CU), halting the shuttle train service and allegedly beating a train driver.

Bangladesh Railway Running Stuff and Worker-Employee Association also announced to stop the train service on the CU route protesting the beating up the driver and demanding punishment to the involved.

Association general secretary M Ali said, “It will not be possible for them to resume the train movement, if the university authorities do not ensure their security.”

Witnesses said Chhatra League activist opened the hush pipe of a CU-bound train in the Sholoshor rail station of the port city at 7:30am.

The activists set fire to tyres at several places on the train track, stretching from Sholoshor to the university.

Sholoshohor Rail Station manger Shahab Uddin said, “Four trains were scheduled to leave for CU till 11:00am, but none left the stations.”

“Ignoring the strike, a loco master, Anwar Hossain, tried to start a train, but the strikers attacked him,” he added.

Sholoshohor police camp In-Charge Arab Ali said, “We found the hush pipe of the train cut in the morning, we are looking into the matter.”

The strikers have also barred the CU-bound minibuses. They made us get down from vehicles on way to campus in the Nandir hat area, said Palash Dey of Communication and Journalism department.

CU Chhatra League human resources development affairs secretary SM Alauddin told banglanews, their protest will continue until the university proctor resigns and attackers of Nasir Haydar Babul, are punished.”

On April 5, a faction of CU Chhatra League assaulted and insulted the Awami League central sub-committee joint secretary at the campus putting garland of shoes around his neck.
