Dhaka ‘likes’ Harvard more than any univ

DHAKA: The people of Bangladesh has somewhat more online obsession with Harvard University that any other university.

At least, the count of the fan numbers of the Official Harvard University Facebook Page proved it true.

Harvard is one of the most famous universities worldwide and it’s widely regarded as one of the best, perhaps the best.

Harvard’s daily student newspaper The Harvard Crimson reported on June 24: “Most of Harvard’s 3.3 million likes (on its Official Facebook Page) come from Bangladesh’s capital city of Dhaka.”

US-based business and technology news website Business Insider first brought the information forefront in a report published on June 18.

But expert claimed about three million of those likes are probably either fakes or paid likes. Lenny Teytelman, founder of ZappyLab, a company that makes apps for research scientists, made the claim to Business Insider.

However, Harvard cleared up the matter in a statement:

“Social media is among the many tools we use to connect with the Harvard community and with many others interested in the teaching, learning and research at Harvard.”

“The University did not pay for any of the 3.3 million likes on its official Facebook page,” added the statement.

The person who made the allegations, Lenny, said that he suspects Facebook is at fault for artificially increasing likes to justify institutions paying to promote their online pages.

Facebook has denied the allegations.
