Students stage demo, boycott class demanding withdrawal of increased fee

DHAKA: Over a thousand students of Jagannath University Monday deserted classes and staged a demonstration demanding withdrawal of increased semester fees.

"More than a thousand of students of 28 departments staged a rally on the campus and declared class boycott until their demand is fulfilled," says a spot report.

The students alleged that the students of 5th batch took admission into the university paying fees for two semesters.

"But, after completion of the first semester, we have been given notice for taking admission into the second semester," said one of the demonstrating students.

In the notice, the students of faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Business, and Sciences have been asked to pay Tk 1685, Tk 1885 and Tk 1935 respectively.

The protestors also submitted a memorandum to the Vice-chancellor of the university following the demo.

Quazi Asaduzzaman, Proctor of the university, said the students are demonstrating “unnecessarily”.

"We will not tolerate programmes like vandalism, arson in the name of movement," he said.

VC Professor Dr Mezbah Uddin told banglanews24.com.bd that the students are doing movement without understanding the matter.

`"I have given responsibility to the Treasurer of the university to discuss the matter with the students," he said.
