MIU observes WISD

DHAKA: Manarat International University (MIU) on Monday observed World Information Society Day (WISD) and the 2nd founding anniversary of the university’s journalism and media studies department.

MIU vice-chancellor Professor Dr. Choudhury Mahmood Hasan was present as chief guest at the event, chaired by the departmental head Professor Dr M Zahangir Kabir.

Bangla daily Naya Diganta editor Alamgir Mohiuddin and journalist and singer Amirul Momenin Manik were present as special guests, said a press release.

Dr Zahangir Kabir made a presentation on the “Role of Media on information Society” and highlighted that the mass media in conjunction with information and communication technologies (ICTs) have to do everything in an information society.

‘The ultimate objectives of an information society are the benefits of information expected to bring, economic growth, individual opportunities, better health, participation and good governance’.

Dr Choudhury Mahmood Hasan emphasized the need of practicing objective and green journalism by the journalists and media professionals, instead of yellow journalism.

Alamgir Mohiuddin stressed for developing higher professional skills and maintain high standard of moral ethical issues in profession to become good and honest journalist.

Amirul Momenin Manik also spoke and presented some patriotic songs on the occasion.

A video editing lab was also inaugurated in the department by the guests on the occasion, the release added.
