Road blockade, class abstention on Sunday

DHAKA: Students of private universities have announced a protest program featuring an indefinite class abstention from Sunday to press their demand of cancellation of value added tax (VAT) on tuition fees.

Moreover, a daylong road blockade in city will be imposed on the day.

They made the announcement at a press conference in city’s Baridhara area on Saturday afternoon.

The students said that their movement is against the government’s decision on VAT imposed on tuition fees not against the government itself.

Rather we seek government’s cooperation to continue our education properly, they added.

According to the students, they want to contribute to the development of the country after completing their education.

Students of several private universities, including BRAC University, AIUB, Daffodil University, IUB and Uttara University were present at the press conference.

They informed the media that they will abstain from class until their demand is met.

Moreover, a road blockade program will begin from 9:00am on Sunday, they added.
