Pvt univ students vow to continue protest

DHAKA: Students of private universities Friday declared to continue their protest in own campuses until the government meet their demand of withdrawing VAT from education.

The announcement came from a students’ press briefing in front East West University near Rampura area of the capital.

On Thursday, private university students took to the streets across Dhaka demanding withdrawal of the 7.5 percent VAT imposed on tuition fees.

They blockaded streets in Rampura, Mohakhali, Barihdara, Dhanmondi and other areas from the morning to press for their demand.

Later in the day, National Board of Revenue (NBR) authorities said that no student of private universities will pay value added tax (VAT) with their tuition fees.

NBR sources said that the VAT is included with their tuition fees. No new VAT has been imposed on the fees.

There is also no option of increasing tuition fees, the sources added.

Defying the assurance, students vowed to continue protest.
