3rd Gobeshona Int’l Annual Conference ends at IUB

DHAKA: The closing ceremony of four-day long “Gobeshona International Annual Conference for Research on Climate Change in Bangladesh” held on Wednesday (January 11) at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) Auditorium in city’s Bashundhara.

Environment and Forests minister Anwar Hossain Monju graced the program as chief guest while President of Inter-Parliamentary Union MP Saber Hossain Chowdhury was present as special guest.

Director of ICCCAD at IUB Dr. Saleemul Huq presented the Keynote Paper in the Ceremony while Executive Director of Bangladesh Center for Advanced Studies (BACS) Dr. Atiq Rahman talked about carrying all agenda forward and implementing them with involvement of all stakeholders, said a press release.

Rashed Chowdhury, Chairman of IUB Board of Trustees, in his speech explained the significance of organizing this program at IUB.

He thanked everyone for making the conference a grand success and urge upon the organizers to include more and more young researchers with ‘Gobeshona’ endeavors.

The session was chaired by Prof M Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor of IUB.

He appreciated the relentless efforts researchers are making towards handling climate change issues. He highlighted the outcomes that ‘Gobeshona’ has seized so far on environmental and climate change factors.

Anwar Hossain Monju underscored that the government has given highest priority on environment and combating climate change issues.

This international conference will bring the researchers, academics, activists and relevant experts together to express their opinions and valuable recommendations that will lead shaping the future policy of the government, the minister underlined.

Organized by the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) at IUB and supported by USAID, the Conference started on January 8.

Almost 200 national and international researchers including representatives from the government of Bangladesh took part through six plenary and fourteen parallel sessions on various climate change issues and topics.

A large number of participants from home and abroad, faculties and senior officers of IUB, students and development activists from different national and international NGOs were present in the closing ceremony.
