HC orders to lift Bangladesh Medical College strike

DHAKA: The high court on Tuesday (March 21) has ordered to withdraw within six hours the Bangladesh Medical College (BDC) strike that started on March 15.

An HC bench comprising Justice Quazi Rezaul Haque and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order after an initial hearing of a writ petition seeking an end to the strike.

The court also issued a rule asking explanation within four weeks why calling strike using patients as hostages should not be declared illegal.

The director general of health and the health secretary were made respondents to the rule.

Lawyer Yunus Ali Akhand moved for the petitioner, Prof Neaz Ahmed Chowdhury, founder of BDC, while Deputy Attorney General Tapas Kumar Biswas represented the state.

Yunus Ali Akhand said on Mar 14, BDC doctors called the strike, led by BDC principle, after a doctor had been transferred from the hospital in Dhanmondi to it's sister concern in Uttara resulting immense sufferings to patients.

The court also ordered the government and the director general of the health department to probe the transfer case and submit it within a week, he added.
