DHAKA: The teachers of country’s Ebtedayee madrasas are continuing their hunger strike in front of the National Press Club in the city despite many teachers fell sick.

Their hunger strike unto death entered sixth day on Sunday (January 14), while it is 14th day of their movement. Many teachers joined the program freshly in the sixth day.

Some teachers are currently undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), while some others fell sick on Sunday.

The teachers under the banner of Bangladesh Swatantra Ebtedayee Madrasa Shikkhok Samity began their hunger strike unto death on January 09 demanding nationalization of all Ebtedayee madrasas.

Earlier, they began their sit-in program in front of the Press Club on January 01. The teachers continued the sit-in program for nine-days before beginning of the hunger strike.

The teachers said that they will continue their hunger strike until the government meets their demand. However, no one from the government visited them yet.

A total of 85,000 Ebtadaye madrasa teachers have not received government salary for 34 years.

The Ebtadaye teachers said that the government increased the salaries and allowances of the primary school teachers but they are deprived of it. They demanded of the government to ensure their pay equality with the primary school teachers.
