No exam up to third grade from 2021: Ministry

DHAKA: The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education said there will be no conventional exam up to the third grade under the new curriculum from 2021 to reduce the pressure on elementary-level school children.

The students will be evaluated in classes throughout the year instead of the first and second terminal exams and annual exam, said the ministry's secretary Md Akram al-Hussein.

According to the National Education Policy-2010, there will be continuous evaluation in the first and second grades and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered not to take any exam up to the third grade.

To reduce the pressure on the children, the instruction was given not to take the exam until the third grade, he added.

Minister of State for Primary and Mass Education Md Zakir Hessen, in a press conference at the Secretariat on Thursday (September 5) on the occasion of International Literacy Day, said it was not a matter of canceling exam right now.

"We had a meeting with the National Board of Curriculum and Textbook (NCTB)," Akram al-Hessen said, adding, “We will start activities in the new curriculum in 2021. In 2020, I will not hold the terminal examination up to the third grade, we will take the Formative Test round the Year. In that case, we will try it in 100 schools.

“Then the new curriculum will be fully implemented in 2021. That is, there will be no formal first and second term and annual examinations. However, students will be evaluated in the classes throughout the year,” he added.
