Accommodation crisis: DU students’ protest postponed

DHAKA: Following the assurance of Dhaka University Vice Chancellor, students postponed their sit-in program, demanding the solution of their accommodation problem.

Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) member Tanvir Hassan Saikat confirmed the information to Banglanews on Tuesday (October 29) noon.

"The Vice-Chancellor has assured us. He will take action to solve the accommodation crisis. This time, those who will be enrolled in the first year will be allotted seats based on merit,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Facing obstruction from a proctorial team at the entrance, students who reside at Gono Room, led by Tanbir took position in front of the VC’s residence.

On October 1, Ducsu member Tanbir Hasan Shaikat issued a 15-day ultimatum to the university administration and also threatened to move in the VC’s residence if the authority fails to take any effective measure by mid October.

Protesting students went to the VC’s residence to shift there around 11:00am. During this time, they displayed various placards, including ' Chhatra Odhikar Mukti pak; Otyachari Nipat Jak. Amar Keno Seat Nai, Proshashon Jobab Chai.

Tanbir issued the ultimatum at a student rally held at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture. Later, he submitted a memorandum to the university authority and formed a human chain with first year students.
