Bollywood Top 10 movies of 2013

DHAKA: Indian cinema marks 2013 as the completion of 100 years of Bollywood. The year witnessed many big-budget films in Bollywood releasing, as well as a number of sequels and quasi-sequels lined up for release. The top ten grossing Bollywood movies at the Indian box office in this year are given below:

Dhoom 3

‘Dhoom: 3’ is a Hindi action thriller film, written and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and produced by Aditya Chopra. It is the third instalment of the Dhoom series featuring Aamir Khan as the antagonist and paired opposite Katrina Kaif.

Actors Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra reprise their roles as Jai Dixit and Ali Akbar respectively as seen is previous franchise. Reported to be one of the highest-budgeted Indian films of all time, ‘Dhoom 3’ was released on 20 December.

The film broke several records on its opening days in India and abroad, Box Office India declared Dhoom 3 ‘the biggest hit of 2013’ after two days of release, with the film grossing INR2 billion (US$31 million) worldwide in just three days.

Chennai Express

‘Chennai Express’ is a romantic action comedy film, directed by Rohit Shetty and produced by Gauri Khan. The film features Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in lead roles.

This is the second collaboration between Khan and Padukone after the 2007 blockbuster Om Shanti Om.

‘Chennai Express’ is about a man’s journey from Mumbai to Rameshwaram and what happens along the way after he falls in love with the daughter of a local don.

The film broke the record held by ‘3 Idiots’ (2009) in the domestic market and was declared a Blockbuster in India by Box Office India. It is also the third highest-grossing Bollywood film in overseas markets.

Krrish 3

‘Krrish 3’ is a Bollywood superhero science fiction film produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan. It is the third film in the Krrish series following Koi... Mil Gaya (2003) and Krrish (2006).

The film stars Hrithik Roshan, Vivek Oberoi, Priyanka Chopra, and Kangna Ranaut in the lead roles.

The story follows the life of Rohit Mehra, a scientist, and Krishna ‘Krrish’ Mehra, his superhero son, who face an elaborate conspiracy orchestrated by the evil genius Kaal and his female henchman Kaya.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ is an Indian coming-of-age romantic comedy film, directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Karan Johar.

The film stars Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in lead roles. This is their second film together after their 2008 film Bachna Ae Haseeno. Madhuri Dixit appears in an item number titled ‘Ghagra’ with Ranbir Kapoor in this film.

Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela

‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’ is a romantic-drama film directed and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It stars Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone as the eponymous leads.

The film is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, set in violent times.

The film earned generally positive reviews and opened to strong box office collections worldwide. The film was declared a ‘hit’ in India and ‘super hit’ overseas by Box Office India.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ is a biographical sports drama film produced and directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra on a script written by Prasoon Joshi, based on the life of Milkha Singh, an Indian athlete who was a national champion runner and an Olympian.

The film stars Farhan Akhtar, Sonam Kapoor, Divya Dutta, Pavan Malhotra, Yograj Singh and Prakash Raj.

Grand Masti

‘Grand Masti’ also referred to as Masti 2 is an adult comedy film directed by Indra Kumar and produced by Ashok Thakeria.

The film is a sequel to the 2004 film ‘Masti’, and features Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani and Riteish Deshmukh reprising their roles from the original, along with Bruna Abdullah, Karishma Tanna, Sonalee Kulkarni, Kainaat Arora, Maryam Zakaria and Manjari Fadnis.

‘Grand Masti’ received largely negative response from critics, but was received well at the box office.

Race 2

‘Race 2’ is an action thriller film directed by Abbas-Mustan. It is the sequel to the 2008 film, ‘Race’ and stars an ensemble cast that includes Anil Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan while Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez and Ameesha Patel are new additions to the cast.

‘Race 2’ opened to mixed reviews from critics and highly positive response at the box office, earning INR1.62 billion (US$25 million) worldwide.

The film was the first one to enter the worldwide Bollywood’s 100 crore club in 2013.

Aashiqui 2

‘Aashiqui 2’ is a romantic musical drama film directed by Mohit Suri. Starring Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor are in the lead roles.

It is a love story centring around the turbulent relationship between musicians Rahul and Arohi, a relationship which is affected by Rahul’s issues with alcohol abuse and temperament.

The film is the sequel to the 1990 musical blockbuster ‘Aashiqui’, and initially caused concern in the Indian media that the film could live up to the high standards and success of the original.

Special 26

‘Special 26’, also known as Special Chabbis, is a thriller heist film directed by Neeraj Pandey with the stars Akshay Kumar and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead roles with Jimmy Shergill, Manoj Bajpai and Anupam Kher in supporting roles.

The film is inspired by a real-life heist on 19 March 1987 where a group posing as CBI officers executed an income tax raid on the Opera House branch of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri in Mumbai.
