DHAKA: British singer Sam Smith has mirrored his UK chart success on the other side of the Atlantic by entering Billboard’s Top 200 at number two.

The 22-year-old’s debut record, ‘In the Lonely Hour’, has sold 166,000 copies in its first week of release in the US and more than one million copies worldwide.

Smith was only held off the top spot by the latest release from Lana Del Rey.

Ultraviolence, the US singer’s third studio album, sold 182,000 copies to claim pole position in the chart.

Smith's record, which topped the UK album chart earlier this month, sold more copies in its first week on US release than any other debut album by a UK male artist.

According to Billboard, ‘In the Lonely Hour’ also scored the largest US debut for a solo artist's first album since November 2012, reports the BBC.
