Gangnam Style breaks YouTube view counter

DHAKA: PSY’s “Gangnam Style” has been viewed so many times now that YouTube had to upgrade its system in order to display it properly.

That’s because the infectious dance hit has been watched more than the maximum number able to be displayed under a 32-bit integer system or 2,147,483,647 views. As of writing the crazy music video has been viewed, 2,151,849,600 times.

YouTube highlighted this milestone in a Google+ post last night, writing: “We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY. "Gangnam Style" has been viewed so many times we have to upgrade!” YouTube also left an easter egg to celebrate this amazing achievement.

If you hover your cursor over the PSY “Gangnam Style” view counter now, the numbers will start spinning and show what would be displayed if YouTube did not upgrade to presumably a 64-bit integer system.

If YouTube did not upgrade, it would show a negative number for how many times “Gangnam Style” has been viewed and we all know that’s not the case. The surprise crossover phenomenon from the South Korean star was posted in July 2012.

In just four months, PSY “Gangnam Style” overtook Justin Bieber’s “Baby” as the most watched video on YouTube and by the end of the year it became the first video to reach one billion views.

It then became the first video to reach two billion views in May, a feat unmatched by any other video. The second most viewed YouTube video is “Baby” with about half as many views at 1.1 billion.

At over 2 billion views, it’s estimated that PSY “Gangnam Style” made some 2 million dollars from YouTube ad revenue alone. With the star making, a total $8 million and $10 million from all revenue streams for just the insanely catchy song.
