DHAKA: Noted poet Rafiq Azad has been admitted to Anwar Khan Medical College and Hospital in city following a brain stroke on Friday.

Later, he was taken to the ICU (intensive care unit) of the hospital, said writer and publisher Humayun Kabir Dhali.

He also said the poet has been suffering from diabetics, kidney and lungs-related complexities for a long time.

Rafiq Azad was born on February 14 in 1941 at Guni village under Ghatail upazila of Tangail district. He took part in the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.

The poet’s contribution to Bangla Literature is invaluable. He was the editor of Bangla Academy’s monthly literary magazine ‘Uttaradhikar’ and also worked in ‘Robbar, remaining anonymous.

He also used to teach Bangla Literature at Maulana Muhammad Ali College in Tangail.

Some of his books are ‘Asombhober Paye’, ‘Simabadho Jole Shimito Sabuje’, ‘Chunia Amar Arcadia’ and so on.

Rafiq Azad received the prestigious ‘Bangla Academy Puroskar’ in 1981 and ‘Ekushe Padak’ in 2013.
