DHAKA: Celebrated poet Al Mahmud has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Ibn Sina Hospital in the city’s Dhanmondi with serious illness at early hours of Sunday (Feb 10). 

His assistant Abid Azam confirmed the matter to Banglanews.

“He (Al Mahmud) has been taken to the ICU. He is undergoing treatment under supervision of neurology specialist Dr Abdul Hye,” said Abid. 

Abid further said the poet’s physical condition has been deteriorating since Friday (Feb 8). He was taken to the ICU at 12:25am.

Al Mahmud is considered one of the greatest Bengali poets to have emerged in the 20th century. He was born in Morail Village of Brahmanbaria district in 1936.

He was honored with many awards including Bangla Academy Literary Award, Ekushey Padak and Joy Bangla Award Jibonananda Memorial Award for his vast contribution to Bangla literature.
