Commuters on Airport Road in Dhaka have suffered from heavy traffic congestion that created since Wednesday night ahead of the Bishwa Ijtema slated to begin Friday.
As the day progresses, the gridlock has extended to the capital's Mohakhali, Rampura and Mirpur's Kalshi.
Commuters, especially office-goers, to and from those areas suffered immensely from intense tailbacks that are choking the parts of the city.
They have been waiting for hours on the road while many of them got down from vehicles and started for their destination on foot.
DMP Traffic Uttara Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nabid Kamal Shaibal said a large number of devotees are coming to Tongi for Ijtema which affected the roads.
"We are working to ease the traffic congestion," he added.
According to traffic control sources, a U-tern in Tongi and heavy pressure of vehicles on the narrow Ashulia are to blame for this concurring traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.
The first phase of the Bishwa Ijtema, the second largest congregation of Muslims, set to begin on January 13 (Friday) on the bank of the Turag River at Tongi.
