HC: Why new body won’t be formed for checking tree cutting

The High Court (HC) today (May 7) issued a rule asking the authorities convened why measures should not be taken to control cutting of trees across the country including Dhaka.

The court also asked the government to show reasons in two weeks why their inaction to stop cutting of trees, except for those owned by private individuals, should not be declared illegal.

A High Court bench of Justice Md. Khasruzzaman and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar issued the rule after the preliminary hearing of a writ filed in the public interest.

Lawyer Manzill Murshid submitted the petition as a public interest litigation on behalf of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) on Sunday (May 5) after media published news of thousands of trees being cut down in various areas despite the recent rise in temperature.
