Expat Ministry warns Bangladeshis against five countries

The Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment has issued a warning to Bangladeshi citizens about potential job scams in Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

The ministry stated that some unscrupulous individuals and scam organizations in these countries are luring job seekers with promises of attractive salaries for positions such as computer operators, typists, and call center operators. These offers are being circulated online through fake websites, emails, and social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Telegram.

According to the ministry, these scam centers often force individuals, including Bangladeshis, into illegal activities after holding them at gunpoint within their facilities. The Bangladesh Embassy in Bangkok has already repatriated several Bangladeshi citizens who were rescued or managed to escape from such centers in Myanmar and Cambodia.

The concerned governments have been urged to take necessary actions.

Additionally, the Bangladesh embassies in Thailand and Myanmar are maintaining regular communication with NGOs and relevant organizations working on cyber scams in these countries.

Job seekers are advised to exercise caution when receiving offers related to computer-related jobs in these countries. They are encouraged to verify the details of recruiting agencies through the ministry’s relevant branches or the Bureau of Manpower, Employment, and Training (BMET) with assistance from Bangladesh embassies abroad.

The ministry also highlighted that these scam centers target individuals via Facebook and WhatsApp, deceiving them into making financial investments through cryptocurrencies. The scammers then shut down their accounts, siphoning off the funds.

Bangladeshis at home and abroad have been advised to be more cautious while using social media to avoid falling victim to such schemes.
