President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus paid homage to the martyred intellectuals marking Martyred Intellectuals Day today (December 14).
President Shahabuddin laid a wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur at 7 am, paying tribute to those who were brutally killed just two days before Bangladesh’s final victory in the 1971 Liberation War.
The Chief Adviser followed shortly after, placing a wreath at the memorial at 7:15 am.
Both leaders stood in solemn silence to honor the memory of the nation’s distinguished martyrs.
A contingent of the Bangladesh Armed Forces performed a state salute, accompanied by the bugle playing the last post.
Following the tribute, the President and Chief Adviser interacted with injured freedom fighters and others who had gathered to pay their respects.
The tragic killing of these intellectuals at the end of the Liberation War was a calculated attempt to disable the newly independent Bangladesh intellectually.
