84-hr hartal begins amid violence

DHAKA: The 84-hour nonstop hartal (shutdown), called by BNP-led 18-party alliance, began on Sunday morning across the country amid stray incidents of explosion, vandalism and arson.

The opposition alliance is observing the lockdown to press home their demand of non-partisan polls-time government.

The hartal started at 6:00am Sunday and will continue till 6:00pm Wednesday.

In capital, at least five activists of Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, sustained bullets injuries when police opened fire in retaliation of hurling  cocktails by Shibir men aiming them in city’s Badda and Mohakhali area at around 7:30am.

Meanwhile, some activists of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of BNP, brought out procession in Shahjadpur area of Gulshan at around 6:45 am and blasted a cocktail.

Besides, hartal supporters brought out processions in Mugda, Lalbagh and Demra areas in the city and blasted couple of cocktails.

On Friday, Acting Secretary General of BNP Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a press conference at Chairperson’s

Gulshan office in the capital declared 72-hour hartal from Sunday morning.

Later in Saturday, BNP Join secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed made the announcement of 12-hour hartal extension in a press conference at BNP`s Nayapaltan central office.
