CHITTAGONG: A passenger was killed as a CNG-run auto-rickshaw t turned turtle after being chased by picketers in Madunaghat area under Hathazari upazila of the district on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Mirmal Das, 45, of South Madarsha of Hathazari.

Jhulan Das, nephew of the deceased, told banglanews that Nirmal Das was going to his work place at Bangabandhu Hospital in port city’s Foy’s lake area at around 7:45am.

When he reached in Madunaghat area, pickets chased the vehicle carrying him and then it tumbled upside down in the street as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving him injured critically, Jhulon added.

Later, he was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where duty doctor declared him dead.

CMCH police outpost Nayek Hamid confirmed the matter to banglanews.

But Hathazari police station Officer-in-Charge SM Liakat Ali said not being chased by pickets, the auto-rickshaw turned turtle due to its reckless speed during hartal.

The 84-hour nonstop hartal (shutdown), called by BNP-led 18-party alliance, is under on Sunday across the country amid stray incidents of explosion, vandalism and arson.
