Jamaat’s hartal underway

DHAKA: The countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal (shutdown) called by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is underway amid violence on Monday, protesting the “planned political killing of the government”.

Acting Secretary General of the party Dr Shafiqur Rahman Sunday said the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued death warrant for Abdul Quader Molla and they wanted to inhibit the execution through stern movement.

However, Jamaat also participated the third phase of countrywide blockade called by 18-party alliance.

On Sunday, the International Crimes Tribunal issued the death warrant for war criminal Abdul Quader Molla.

Chhatra Shibir activists brought out a procession in support of the hartal in Badda Nayanagar area of the city at around 8:30am.

In a stage they tried to block the road by pouring petrol on the road and setting fire to it.

Police fired 22 rounds from their shot guns.

Meanwhile, another group of Shibir activists brought out a procession in the Nodda bus stand area. Police held two from the procession.
