DMP denies BNP protest rally

DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was not given permission to stage their pre-scheduled protest rally in city on Saturday.

On Thursday evening, spokesperson for the party Dr M Osman Faruk, also adviser to the BNP chairperson, declared the protest rally across the country.

Sources said, as a part of their programme, BNP Dhaka city committee pleaded to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for a protest rally to be held at city’s Suhrawardy Udyan.

The committee, on Saturday morning, submitted an application to the DMP for the rally.

Signed by BNP Dhaka city member secretary Abdus Salam, the letter was sent to the DMP by a staff of BNP headquarters, Mohammad Rustam.

A source from BNP said the DMP did not permit them to hold the rally. But, the party is yet to get any official statement from the DMP.
