SC upholds 5 BNP leaders’ bail

DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld a High Court order that granted bail to five BNP leaders including Standing Committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed.

The other leaders include, Standing Committee members MK Anwar and Rafiqul Islam Mia and leaders Abdul Awal Mintoo and Shamsur Rahman Shimul.

The government recently filed a petition with the SC seeking stay of the bail order.

A five-member bench headed by Chief Justice Mohammad Mozammel Hossian, on Sunday, passed no order on the petition.

Attorney general Mahbube Alam was present during the hearing.

Earlier on last January 21, a High Court bench of justice Nizamul Haque and justice Mohammad Jahangir Hossian granted bails to five BNP leaders on separate appeals.

Police filed two cases, on September 24 and November 5, with Motijheel Thana accusing them for violent activities.

Police, later, detained the leaders from different areas in the city.
