300 oppn men killed, disappeared

DHAKA: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday charged the government with the killing and disappearance of over 300 opposition men across the country before and after the January 5 polls.

She vowed that her party along with its key allies will leave no stones unturned to restore democracy which the Awami League has "destroyed".

The BNP chief levelled the serious charge while addressing a press conference at a city hotel in the afternoon.

The former premier urged the government to stop the killing and oppression of opposition men to pave the way for the return of democracy.

In response to a query, the BNP chief said it was proved that their decision to boycott the January 5 parliamentary polls was right.

Khaleda added: “We were not wrong in boycotting. All of you know how farcical the election was."

In response to another query about taking part in the upazila election, the 19-party alliance chief said, “Anyone can participate in local government elections as they are not the parliamentary polls.”

The BNP chief also asked the government to stop the killing and disappearance of opposition leaders and activists.

Khaleda Zia said the incumbent government is illegal as most of the lawmakers were elected without a contest. The people of the country boycotted the January 5 polls, she insisted.

She also criticized the government for their misdeeds across the length and breadth of the nation.
