BNP reaffirms stance against banning political parties

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has reiterated that his party does not support the banning of any political party in the country.

Speaking to journalists at an event at the BRAC Centre in Dhaka’s Mohakhali on Saturday, Fakhrul said that such decisions should be left to the people.

In response to questions about calls to ban the Jatiya Party, he said that it was part of a deliberate scheme to stir up instability.

Following the ouster of the Awami League on August 5 due to a student-led movement, various groups called for the party’s ban.

Tensions resurfaced when protesters set fire to the Jatiya Party’s central office after an attack on student leader Sarjis, leading to increased calls for banning both the Awami League and Jatiya Party.

Fakhrul said that these matters were being intentionally escalated and urged citizens to stay alert against any efforts to provoke political chaos.
