A local BNP leader was brutally murdered by unknown assailants on Tuesday (November 5) afternoon in front of the Amtala Mosque in Mirzapur, Bagerhat.
The victim Sajib Torofdar, son of the late Siddiq Torofdar, was leader and ex-member of the Dema Union Parishad.
The incident happened around 2:00 p.m. as Sajib, along with his uncle Kamal Torofdar, was traveling by motorcycle from his village in Dema to Bagerhat town via the Bagerhat-Rampal road.
According to locals, the assailants stopped them in front of the mosque, shooting Sajib in the head four times to ensure his death, and attacking him with sharp weapons. Kamal Torofdar was injured by gunfire and has been admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Following the incident, police and army personnel arrived at the scene. Police recovered the body and sent it for an autopsy at Bagerhat Sadar Hospital.
According to family members, the murder was politically motivated, accusing local rivals of plotting his death. “This is a planned murder by political opponents,” said Sajib's elder brother, Nazmul Torofdar. “We demand justice for Sajib’s killing.”
Bagerhat Police Superintendent Md. Touhidul Arif said, "The attackers were masked and likely worked in multiple teams to ensure the killing."
He said, a thorough investigation is underway to identify and arrest the killers.
