‘Violence intensified to win pro-AL candidates’

DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)’s Dhaka district president Abdul Mannan alleged that violence was intensified during last phase of upazila polls to win the government-backed candidates.

The BNP leader said Thursday morning after attending the BNP organized protest program to gherao Dhaka district administration office and submitting a memorandum due to alleged irregularities in upazila polls.

He claimed that during the three phases of upazila polls ballot boxes were snatched, poll centers were occupied and BNP leaders and activists were under attacks.

The BNP leader further claimed that four of its party members were killed and several hundreds injured in upazila polls related violence.

After handing over a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Yusuf Harun, the BNP leader told media that he has demanded for arranging next two phases of upazila polls in free and fair manner.

The DC has accepted our memorandum and that’s why we did not continue our gherao program, he added.
