5 chairmen, vice-chairmen arrested

RANGPUR: Police on Thursday arrested five newly elected chairmen and vice-chairmen of three upazilas in allegation of creating violence and obstructing police from discharging government works.

The detainees are Abdur Rahman Abdar, chairman of Atwari upazila of Panchagarh district and Shafiul Alam Shafiq and Mohammad Shahjahan, chairman and vice-chairman of Boda upazila of the district and Golam Rabbani and Abdul Baset, chairman and vice chairman of Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur district.

All of them were elected in the first phase of the fourth upazila elections.

The detainees were scheduled to take oath at Rangpur Divisional Commissioner’s office at 3:00pm Thursday.

Police in plain cloth arrested them from the gate of the office at around 2:30pm.

After the arrest police brought them to Rangpur Kotwali Thana.

Kotwali Thana’s Officer-in-Charge Abdul Qader Jilani said that they had arrested those five chairmen and vice-chairmen when they came to take oath.
