Afil-Monirul now MP-elect

DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC), on Sunday, exempted Awami League leaders Sheikh Afil Uddin and Monirul Islam, who were unofficially elected as members of parliament from Jessore constituencies 1 and 2, from their alleged involvement in violation of the electoral code.

EC official said a gazette notification will be published later in the day declaring them as elected lawmakers as the four commissioners of EC have signed already.

On January 5, Afil was elected unopposed from Jessore-1 constituency and Monirul Islam won the polls from Jessore-2 in the 10th National Parliament polls.

The election commission took the decision after a hearing, which began at 11:00am at the EC secretariat conference room.

The EC earlier issued notices to Sheikh Afil Uddin and Monirul Islam on charges of violation of the electoral code of conduct.

Both replied to the notices on January 15.

Finally, EC acquitted them from the charges so there are no other complications of taking oath as MPs.
