Surgery on MannanÔÇÖs windpipe postponed

DHAKA: Physicians refrained from doing surgical operation on the malfunctioning windpipe of former BNP secretary-general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan Saturday.

They had to postpone the operation as there was not enough platelet in his blood, said Mannan’s personal physician Bazlul Gani Bhuiyan.

Bhuiyan, lying on life support at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Square Hospital, was supposed to undergo the operation Saturday for setting a tube in his windpipe to keep it risk-free.

Quoting physician Dr. Nuruzaman, Bazlul Gani told banglanews24.com.bd, “Doctors are trying to make up the platelet deficiency in Bhuiyan’s blood. Already, he has been given   30-bag platelets. The surgery will be done within a few days.”

Meanwhile, his health conditions remained unchanged in last 24 hours. The estranged BNP leader now can inhale 30 to 35 percent oxygen normally, said the doctor.

The senior politician is on life-support system due to his inability to breathe normally. He has been undergoing treatment at the Square Hospital since he returned from Singapore.

Earlier, the former local government minister flew to Singapore on May 31 for treatment. He had undergone treatment at Singapore National University Hospital. He was given chemotherapy eight times there, said his family members.
