DHAKA: Two Dhaka courts Thursday placed Nayeb-e-Ameer of Jamaat Delwar Hossain Sayedee on four days’ remand in two cases, one on attempt to murder Prof Humayun Azad.

Metropolitan Magistrate SK Tofael Hassan granted one-day fresh remand in the ‘attempt-to-murder’ case for the deadly attack on the Dhaka University teacher and progressive writer, Prof Azad, on February 27, 2004.

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inspector Mostafizur Rahman, also the IO of the case, produced him in the court with seven-day-remand prayer

Another Magistrate, Roksana Begum Happy, also granted police three days to interrogate the Islamic cleric-politician upon a 10-day-remand appeal in Kadomtali thana case, filed under the Anti-terrorism Act.

Earlier, Sayedee had been remanded for five days in two phases on charge of “attempting to kill” professor Azad.

On February 27, 2004, some miscreants attacked professor Humayun Azad near TSC while he was returning home from Ekushey Book Fair, living him seriously injured.

Azad died on August 11, 2007 during research work in Germany.

Delwar Hossain Sayedee was arrested along with Jamaat chief Motiur Rahman Nizami and Secretary-General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed on June 29 on charges of hurting religious sentiments of Muslims through their blasphemous comments.
