“Fair polls impossible under Hasina”

NARSINGDI: Opposition BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday categorically said no election would be fair under Sheikh Hasina’s government.

Urging the government to dissolve parliament, she added that her party would not participate in any election without non-party government.

She came up with the observation while addressing a mass rally at Balur-Math in Narsingdi in the afternoon.

Khaleda Zia said: “Political parties, which are not in the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance, also want the caretaker system restoration for holding next elections.”

She added: “People like Dr Kamal Hossain, Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and Quader Siddiqui also want the restoration of the caretaker system.”

The former Prime Minister urged the government to introduce a bill in the next session of Parliament to revive the constitutional provision, saying, “We are not demanding anything irrational.”

She also alleged that Hasina herself shut doors to discussion.

Khaleda Zia also said her party would not participate and would not allow any election to be held without non-party government.

Meanwhile, the rally began around 2:30pm with Narsingdi district BNP president Khairul Kabir Khokan in the chair. Local leaders of the party are addressing in the rally.

The leader of the opposition started her first round of visit in seven divisions Sunday to foster support for opposition’s ongoing movement for restoring caretaker government system.

The other rallies will be held on September 15 in Rajshahi, on September 16 in Rangpur, on September 22 in Khulna, on September 28 in Barisal and on October 5 in Sylhet.
