Muhith for National ID obligatory for voting

DHAKA: Finance Minister AMA Muhith urged Election Commission (EC), in a letter, to make it obligatory to show National Identity Card (NID) in the polling centres.

He also urged the EC to give the opportunity to voters to change their voting area till 15 days prior to the date of vote, postal ballots for the officials who are related with the work of election, increase the number of centres and fixed the number of voters for every centre and to follow strict methods to allow election observers.

The finance minister, also ruling Awami League, lawmaker sent the letter on his official pad to EC on September 29.

Officials of election commission secretariat, in this connection, told banglanews: “There is no chance to use National Identity Cards under the current laws.”

Besides, EC forbade making the NID obligatory as it has not reached to all citizens.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rakibuddin Ahmed sent copies to all concerned persons including the EC secretary and called to produce the matter in a meeting.
