Hartal violence kills 6 in 6 dists

DHAKA: At least six people, including one activist of Jamaat-e-Islami and three BNP and two Jubo League men, were killed in separate hartal violence on Sunday, the first day of 18-party’s 60-hour hartal.

The deceased were identified as Swapan Shil, resident of Balipara area of Pirojpur Sadar, Maruf Hossain, 22, son of Rabu Sheikh, of Nagarkanda municipal area of Faridpur district, Julhas Uddin Munnaf, 35, Jamaat Islami activist and Alamgir Hossain Shimul, 35, general secretary of Noapara municipal unit of Juba League, the youth wing of ruling Awami League of Pabna district, Shahjahan 40, a local leader BNP of Bogra and Siddique a BNP activist of Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj.
 
In Pirojpur: An activist of Juba League was killed in an attack by the hartal supporters in Zianagar under the Sadar upazila of the district

In Faridpur: A Jubo Dal activist was shot dead in a clash between hartal supporters and cops in Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur district.

In Pabna: An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed in a clash between BNP-Jamaat men and Juba League-Chhatra League men in Muladuli area under Iswardi upazila of the district.

In Jessore: A municipal unit Juba League leader was killed in BNP-Jamaat attack at Avoynagar in the district.

In Bogra: A BNP activist was killed and five others were injured in a factional clash between two groups of the party in Tin Matha intersection area under Gabtali upazila of the district on Sunday noon.

In Narayanganj: A BNP man was killed in a clash between Awami League and BNP at Araihazar upazila in the district in the noon.

Held, Injured

At least 12 people were held in different parts of country including capital.

In capital: Police held nine people, including five Shibir activists, from new market and Rampura areas in city as they were picketing.

Meanwhile, Shibir men vandalized two vehicles and blasted cocktails to create panic among locals.

In Narayanganj: Police held town BNP general secretary ATM Kamal from when the leaders and activists of the party brought out a procession during hartal hours.

Narayanganj Sadar Model Thana Officer-in-Charge Manjur Quader confirmed it to banglanews.

Besides, pickets vandalized a police van in the town and police held a person in this connection.

In Gazipur: At least seven people were injured in a clash between activists of Awami League and BNP in Zaina Bazar area under Sripur upazila of the district.

Following the incident police held Jamaat leader Mobarak Hossain from Nayanpur area.

In Munshiganj: At least 20 people were injured in a clash between Juba League and BNP activists on Dhaka-Mawa highway in Nimtala area of Sirajdikhan of the district on Sunday morning.

In Bhola: At least 10 people were injured in a clash between picketers and police in Miarhat area of Daulatkhan of the district.

The 60-hour nonstop nationwide hartal, called by the BNP-led 18-party alliance, is underway on Sunday morning amid stray incidents of violence.
