Hartal violence kills 1, injures 76

DHAKA: A passerby was shot dead and 76 people were injured across the country as 18-party’s 60-hour hartal is progressing for third consecutive day.

The deceased was identified as Maruf, 18, son of Afsar Sarkar resident of Mohammadpur upazila of Magura district.

In Magura: A pedestrian was killed in chase and counter chase between hartal supporters and law enforcers in Dhoail Bazar area under Mohammadpur upazila of the district around 12:00 noon.

Held, Injured

In capital, police held seven BNP activists from city’s Hatirjheel, Shahjalal airport and Jagannath University areas when they brought out processions and blasted cocktails.

On the other hand, at least 15 people were injured in separate clashes between pickets and law enforcers in the city.

Besides, Officer-in-Charge of Hazaribagh Police Station Mainul Islam was injured critically as Jamaat-Shibir men hurled cocktail aiming him in city’s Dhanmondi area in the morning.

In Gazipur: At least 60 leaders and activists of 18-party, including the Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Abdul Mannan, were injured, councilor by bullet, in an hour-long clash between hartal supporters and law enforcers from 9:30am.

In Feni: At least 15 people were injured in a clash between police and BNP activists around 10:30am in Daganbhiyan upazila of the district on Tuesday morning.

In Natore: Police held six BNP-Jamaat men as they were picketing in Fulbagan area of the town.

Violence in Second day of hartal

Six people, including Awami League activist, 2 BNP leaders, a BNP activist, a truck driver and a teen-aged passer-by, were killed in separate violence in Tangail, Jamalpur, Chittagong, Chandpur, Jhenaidah, Kishoreganj on Monday.

Violence in first day of hartal

At least six people, including one activist of Jamaat-e-Islami and three BNP and two Jubo League men, were killed in separate hartal violence in Pirojpur, Faridpur, Pabna, Jessore, Bogra and Narayanganj on Sunday.

The opposition alliance is observing the shutdown from 6:00am Sunday (October 27) to 6.00pm Tuesday (October 29) on demand of poll-time non-party caretaker government.
