Ons Jabeur donates prize money to Palestinians Tunisian tennis star Ons Jabeur

Tennis player Ons Jabeur, after her victory at the WTA Finals in Cancun, announced that she would be donating a portion of her prize money to help Palestinians.

She had defeated Markéta Vondroušová with a score of 6-4, 6-3, making a strong comeback after her earlier loss to Coco Gauff.

In an emotional post-match interview, Jabeur shared her concerns about the ongoing conflict in Gaza, saying, "I am very happy with the win but I haven't been very happy lately. The situation in the world doesn't make me happy."

She expressed her sadness at the loss of lives, especially children and babies, and decided to contribute some of her prize money to support Palestinians.

Jabeur emphasized that her decision was not political but rooted in a desire for peace in the world.

Jabeur, who is 29 years old, is aiming to reach the top four of the WTA Finals for the first time in her career. She will face group leader Iga Swiatek in her last group stage match.

Swiatek, in her match against Coco Gauff, emerged victorious with a score of 6-0, 6-4. She took a commanding lead in the first set, breaking Gauff's serve and securing a 4-0 lead.

Gauff showed resilience in the second set, taking a 3-1 lead, but Swiatek fought back to level the score at 4-4. Gauff faced challenges, including a string of double faults, leading to her defeat.

In another match, Ons Jabeur avenged her previous Wimbledon final loss to Vondroušová with a straight-set win.

She secured the first set with a break of Vondroušová's serve and then won the second set convincingly. This victory marked her first win in the group after her earlier loss to Gauff.

The group standings now have Swiatek at the top with two wins, followed by Jabeur and Gauff with one win each.

Vondroušová is at the bottom with two losses, but all four players in the group have a chance to reach the semi-finals.
