ICC T20 World Cup: Bangladesh to face Netherlands today

Bangladesh face Netherlands on Thursday (June 13) in a match that could have a major influence on the teams advancing to the Super 8s from Group D in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

The Tigers and the Dutchman currently are level on two points each, having won one and lost one game each so far in the tournament. Both of Bangladesh’s matches went down the wire, beating Sri Lanka by two wickets in Dallas before suffering a four-run loss against South Africa in New York.

The Netherlands too suffered a defeat against the Proteas in New York — by four wickets while defending a score of 103. This was after they had begun their campaign with a six-wicket victory over Nepal in Dallas.

Both teams will be in unfamiliar territory on Thursday, playing their first match in the Caribbean after matches in Dallas and New York. Ahead of the clash in Kingstown, St Vincent, we take a look at Bangladesh’s qualification chances:

How Bagladesh can qualify for Super 8s

Bangladesh will find themselves in pole position to qualify for the Super 8s alongside the Proteas, who have already made it to the next round with a hat-trick of wins.

The Bangla Tigers enter Thursday’s clash against Scott Edwards’ Dutchmen as the favourites, not just because of the fact that that they’re a Full Member and not an Associate nation like Netherlands but also because of the fact that they put up a much tougher fight against South Africa than what Netherlands manager. They had also beaten Sri Lanka in their opening clash in Dallas.

A victory will not seal their place in the second round right away, but will make them the favourites for the same.

Netherlands, however, will not rule out the prospect of collecting a second win in three outings. The Dutch, after all, enjoy a 3-1 lead over Bangladesh in ODIs even if it’s the latter who lead the head-to-head record in the 20-over format, meaning they know what it takes to vanquish them.

If match ends in a washout:

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will be desperately hoping Thursday’s fixture at the Arnos Vale Ground ends in a washout. That is the only way the 2014 T20 world champions, who have just one point to their name in three outings, can advance to the next round.

Besides the Bangladesh-Netherlands match ending in a washout, they’ll also need to defeat the Netherlands in their final outing of the tournament while hoping Nepal are able to defeat Bangladesh, but somehow lose to South Africa.

As if all of that isn’t complicated enough, they’ll also need to win their remaining matches by handsome margins to catch up on Net Run Rate.
