India defeated Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first Test of the series, held in Chennai, securing a dominant 1-0 lead.

Bangladesh, chasing a formidable target of 515, started day four at 158 for four but was quickly bowled out for 234 before lunch.

Despite a strong resistance from skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored 82, Bangladesh couldn't withstand India's bowling attack.

Ravichandran Ashwin starred for India, claiming six wickets in the innings, marking his 37th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

India's all-round performance was bolstered by key contributions throughout the match.

In their first innings, Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja helped rescue India from a precarious 144 for six, forming a crucial 199-run partnership, which allowed the hosts to post 376.

India extended their lead in the second innings, with centuries from Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, before setting Bangladesh an insurmountable target.

With this win, India continued their impressive home Test record, having not lost a series at home in over 12 years. The second Test of the series will take place in Kanpur on September 27.
