Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam led Bangladesh’s bowling attack on Day 2 of the second Test against South Africa at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, securing his 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
He effectively broke South Africa’s strong batting momentum, which was built on a 116-run partnership between Tony de Zorzi and David Bedingham.
Taijul dismissed Bedingham for 59, then removed de Zorzi, who had scored a well-fought 177, in quick succession.
In the next over, Taijul trapped Kyle Verreynne, a centurion from the first Test, for a duck via LBW, leaving South Africa at 413/5 by lunch.
Notably, spinners dominated the session, with Taijul and Mehidy Hasan delivering 23 out of the 29 overs bowled.
As of the second session, South Africa reached 441/6, with Mehidy yet to secure a wicket despite his lengthy spell, and Nahid Rana taking another wicket as the innings progressed.
