Russia- Jordan Agreement on NPP Construction Soon

DHAKA: Jordan will sign an agreement with Russia’s State Corporation- ROSATOM for construction of a nuclear power plant in their territory by the end of current month.

Chairman of Jordan Atomic Energy Commission Khalid Toukan disclosed the information while addressing a press conference held in Amman recently.

The Jordan Nuclear Power Project will have two Russian VVER reactors, each with 1,000 Mw capacity. The agreement will also have provisions for water cooling system, energy market analysis, site evaluation, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), supply of nuclear fuel for initial 10 years and return of nuclear waste to Russia.

Rosatom will finance 49% of the total project cost of approx USD 10 billion.

According to Leos Tomicek, Vice President of Rusatom Overseas, overseas marketing concern of Rosatom told that, formation of a joint venture with the Jordanian owner company of the project is under consideration. It may be mentioned here that similar model is working in Finland.

Earlier in 2013, Rosatom won the international tender for setting up nuclear power plant in Jordan.
